Retours vers les 4 Guys From The Future

Les quatre Danois du futur racontent les disques qui les ont influencés dans la genèse de Under The New Morning.

Et si 4 Guys from from the Future venait de réaliser l’exploit de mettre en son l’imposante architecture du centre Beaubourg ? Leur premier album s’apparente en effet à un laboratoire balbutiant de pop bigarrée, psychédélique, post punk et krautrock : un chantier constant aux progressions mélodiques aussi délirantes qu’alambiquées. Ces Danois visionnaires ont choisi huit disques de leur collection qui ont eu un impact sur leur passionnant premier album, Under The New Morning Sun.

 

Can – Tago Mago

Can a commencé à nous inspirer avec l’album Ege Bamyasi. Je pense que c’est le premier disque qui a eu une influence sur notre travail. Mais « Tago Mago » possède également une facette expérimentale passionnante, tout en étant un disque très varié sur le plan musical et stylistique. Nous voulions nous en approcher sur le morceau « Under The New Morning Sun ». Un peu de mélancolie, de tristesse, de liberté et de plaisir… Finalement, c’est ce que l’on retrouve sur chacun de leurs albums.

Neu! – Neu! 2

Le titre d’ouverture « Für Immer » fut pour moi la chanson qui m’initia et me fit comprendre la musique krautrock pour la première fois. Je saisis vraiment où ils voulaient en venir. Cet album est notre référence dans sa manière d’utiliser la rythmique de façon fluide et continue. Et plus particulièrement sur « Don´t help me up » et « While the Bombs Fell from the Bluest Sky »… Un flux rythmique énergique drapé sous une écriture mélodique et mélancolique.

Bowie – Heathen

Après les événements du 11-Septembre, cet album m’a fait accéder à une maturité que je n’avais encore jamais expérimentée jusqu’alors. L’album traite d’une sorte de réminiscence ou de regard rétrospectif dans le temps. Le regard d’un homme face à la peur et au changement. Les deux premiers versets de « Sunday » commencent par : « Rien ne subsiste » et « Tout a changé ». Sur « Slip Away » : « Certains d’entre nous resteront toujours derrière », comme s’il disait que ce serait peut-être son dernier album. Sur « Heathen (The Rays) », les paroles complètes sont les suivantes (et j’ai lu Bowie raconter que cet album a été enregistré avant le 11 septembre 2001) : Steel on the skyline

Vous voyez où je veux en venir ? J’ai indéniablement grandi lorsque j’ai entendu cet album, de la même façon que j’ai grandi – comme nous tous – en regardant le 11-Septembre à la télé.

Einstürzende Neubauten – Perpetuum Mobile

Un grand album par un grand groupe. J’ai découvert Neubauten il y a seulement trois ans. Je suis trop jeune pour les avoir connus encore jeunes et portés par la flamme sacrée. Mais je les ai vus sur scène deux fois, lors de leur dernière visite à Copenhague et le hasard a fait que la sœur d’un ami sort avec Jochen Arbeit de Neubauten : j’ai donc eu le grand plaisir de passer mon 29e anniversaire en fumant un joint avec Einstürzende Neubauten ! Quelle façon de fêter son anniversaire! Leurs paysages sonores expérimentaux, qui utilisent des sons réels et des «objets physiques» comme des instruments, créent une atmosphère assez rude et désagréable. Nous nous en sommes inspirés sur les thèmes de « Cutting Your Heart Out Fucking » et « Astronomers Of The Heart »…

The Good The Bad and The Queen – TGTBATQ

Le songwriting de Damon Albarn sur cet album m’a ouvert à de nouvelles voies d’expression. À travers de « simples » progressions mélodiques et harmoniques, Albarn réussit à créer un langage très intense et élégant. Et avec sa voix charmante, dansante, et le travail du batteur Tony Allen — génie de l’afrobeat qui travaille comme un bubble gum (parfois mince, parfois collant) — tous les ingrédients du succès sont là ! La production est si intelligemment mise en place qu’un nouveau monde est créé, encore une fois, un monde qui a mal tourné. C’est aussi une sorte de regard rétrospectif. Je pourrais dire tellement de choses sur cet album, de même que pour les autres, mais il faudrait me payer une bière ! J’aime la façon dont Albarn chante « Low Key ». Je voudrais réussir le même effet.

Rumspringa – Rumspringa II

C’est le deuxième album de Jarno Varsted, du groupe Rumspringa. Allez acheter cet album. Il a été enregistré à Berlin et est plus vivant, charmant, drôle et bluesy que n’importe quel album essayant d’obtenir le même effet. Jarno est un artiste original… Je pense que je l’ai bien vendu maintenant. 🙂

The Beatles – Revolver

Aussi loin que la composition et le chant m’aient concerné, les Beatles ont toujours été une grande influence. Lorsque nous vivions à Berlin avec Rasmus, nous écoutions beaucoup Revolver (surtout parce que nous vivions avec un mec espagnol, Manuel, qui écoutait « I’m Only Sleeping » chaque foutu matin. C’était génial ! ). La voix et les paroles de Lennon sur Revolver me semblent d’une grande honnêteté — à 50 % influencées par une touche de psychédélisme, à 50 % par la réalité (mais qui a dit que le psychédélisme n’était pas la réalité ? Peut-être que ces proportions sont trop carrées, mais cela donne une idée). Bien sûr, Lennon est une grande source d’inspiration pour mon chant… et je me retrouve toujours à comparer chaque chanteur que j’entends avec lui. Très peu détiennent ce genre de personnalité dans leur voix. Les pop-singers d’aujourd’hui ne semblent jamais en avoir !

Scott Walker – Scott 4

Par où devrais-je commencer pour parler de Scott Walker ? J’ai été présenté à Scott en 2005 par un de mes amis, Tobias, mais il a fallu attendre deux ans avant que je ne le retrouve et tombe sérieusement amoureux de lui. Je suis sûr que Scott et moi avons la même âme quelque part dans l’univers. Je me sens très connecté à sa voix et à son personnage (voire même à sa personne, ha! ha!). « Astronomers Of The Heart » fait référence à Scott Walker : « Scott´s singing Angels of Ashes we´re sharing that moment, a piano of souls play out our unmet goals time — and formless. »‘ Je veux écrire la première biographie danoise sur Scott Walker. Cela me prendrait toute une vie, mais il faut que je m’y mette !

Epilogue

Vous devez vous rappeler que tous ces albums nous ont influencés lors de la réalisation de Under The New Morning Sun  et de nombreuses façons. Il n’est peut -être pas possible pour vous d’entendre un lien quelconque entre ces albums et les nôtres, car c’est dans ma tête. Peut-être que vous saisirez tout cela. Quoi qu’il en soit, la musique est destinée à être entendue et ressentie, elle ne s’explique pas avec des mots… J’aime en parler, mais découvrir par soi-même est beaucoup plus amusant — et beaucoup plus rapide. J’espère que ce fut suffisamment intéressant à lire pour vous inciter à chercher tous les albums que nous avons évoqués.

8 albums that inspired 4 Guys From The Future in the making of « Under The New Morning Sun »…and a bit about WHY? Can – Tago Mago

WHY: Our inspiration from Can began with Ege Bamyasi. I think that was the album we heard first, and as it is the first Can album. But Tago Mago has a great experimental side to it and is a musically varied album both stylistically. We wanted a bit the same on « Under The New Morning Sun ». A bit of melancholy, sadness, freedom and fun….it´s all on both albums as far as I think at least.

Neu! – Neu! 2

WHY: The albumopener « Für Immer » was for me personally the song that introduced and explained krautrock to me for the first time. I seemed to really understand what they were doing. This album is very much the rhythmic background-inspiration to our way of wanting the rhythm to be flowing and continuous…f.x on « don´t help me up », « while the bombs fell from the bluest sky »….a stream of energetic beat underneath a melodic and melancholic songwriting.

Bowie – Heathen

WHY: After 9/11 this album put me in contact with a matureness I hadn´t experienced before. The album deals with a kind of « leftover » or retrospective gaze back in time – from a time further away. A gaze from a man dealing with fear and change. The two first verses of Sunday begin with: « Nothing remains » and « Everything has changed ». On Slip Away: « Some of us will always stay behind »…like saying this is maybe my last album…on Heathen (The Rays) the full lyrics are: (and I have read Bowie say that this album was recorded before 9/11 2001) Do you get the point I´m trying to make? I grew older when I heard this album, as I did seeing 9/11 on tv – as I think we all did.

Einstürzende Neubauten – Perpetuum Mobile

WHY: Is a great album from a great band. Neubauten I found only 3 years ago. I am too young to have experienced them when they were young and really sprouting with fire, it seems. But I saw them live two times, last time they visited copenhagen..and by mere luck, one of my friends sister is together with Jochen Arbeit of Neubauten, which means I had the great pleasure of having my 29th birthday smoking a joint with Einstürzende Neubauten! What a way to turn 29…anyway, their experimental soundscapes using real sounds and « physical objects » as instruments creates a very rough and unpleasant atmosphere. We used that as inspiration on « Cutting Your Fucking Heart Out » and « Astronomers Of The Heart »….

The Good The Bad and The Queen – TGTBATQ

WHY: Damon Albarns songwriting on this album learned me new possibilities of expression. Through the « simple » melodic and harmonic shifts and structures Albarn succeeds in creating a very intense and elegant language. and with his charming voice, a dancy, bouncing afrobeat genious Tony Allen working as bubble gum (sometimes thin, sometimes stickering) the ingredients are present!!! And then the production is so intelligently put together that a new world is created – again a world where thigs have gone wrong…kind of looking back also…I could say alot about this album, as goes for the others, but you would need to buy me a beer! I love the way Albarn sings « low key »….I wanted to do the same…

Rumspringa – Rumspringa II

WHY: Is the phenomenal second album of Jarno Varsted´s band Rumspringa. Go and get this album. It as recorded in Berlin and is more lively, charming, humourous and bluesy than any album trying to do the same. Jarno is an original artist…well, now that´s sold I think:)

Beatles – Revolver

WHY: As far as songwriting and vocals are concerned, Beatles has always been a big influence. Living in Berlin me and Rasmus listened alot to Revolver ( mostly because we lived with a spanish guy called Manuel who heard « I´m Only Sleeping » every single fucking morning…hah…t´was great! But Lennon´s voise and lyrical universe on Revolver seems to me to be at a very honest point – 50% influenced by psydelism, 50% reality´s touch ( who says psych isn´t reality??? and maybe these percentenges are a bit square, but then we all get something out of it). And of course Lennons vocal is a big inspiration to my love for singing myself…and I always find myself comparing every singer I hear with Lennon. Very few seem to have that kind of personality in their voice…the popsingers today seem to NEVER have it!!!!

  Scott Walker – Scott 4

WHY: Where should I begin and end talking about Scott Walker. I was introduced to Scott in 2005 by a friend of mine Tobias, but a couple of years went before I found him again, and seriously fell in love. I am sure that me and Scott have the same soul somewhere out there in the universe. I feel very connected to his voice and character ( or persona at least..haha). « Astronomers Of The Heart » has a Scott Walker reference: « Scott´s singing Angels of Ashes we´re sharing that moment, A piano of souls play out our unmet goals time- and formless »….I want to write the first danish Scott Walker biography….but it would take me a lifetime!!! … l´ll get started!!!!!

WHY: You have to remember that all these albums have influenced us in the making « Under The New Morning Sun » and in many different ways. Maybe it´s not even possible for you to hear any connection between these albums and ours, cause it´s all in my head. Maybe you get it all. Anyway, music is meant to be heard and felt, not explained in words… I love to talk about it, but in person is much more fun – and a lot faster.
